A Va Beach Teacher's reason for quitting their job

I recently received an email from a Virginia Beach teacher who wanted to share with me what they wrote on their exit survey.  The teacher gave me permission to anonymously share what was written  How many more teachers have left for the same reasons?

I used to be very proud to say I worked for VBCPS, but our system has really changed over the years. We lack discipline and I am tired of worrying about what color the skin of the child is when there is a discipline problem. I am tired of feeling pressure to pass kids that don’t deserve it. We continue to make the curriculum easier and easier for the students. We don’t teach responsibility. We can’t give below a 49 when a kid should receive a 0 for not producing work. We shouldn’t have to take late work. I don’t get to do any of that in the real world. We are producing lazy children with no work ethic.

I am not a guidance counselor and should not be teaching SEL Lessons. I  find much of the material divisive and offensive. We hardly have enough time for the 3 R’s....our kids need to be taught to critically think, not what to think.

It is a real shame to see the directional change of our school system over the past few years. I am glad I no longer have children in the school system. My kids worked hard for their class rank and were very proud of their accomplishments. Students should be recognized for being the top of their class, not just an honor student.

I was finally reading the school newsletter and saw the thing about grades. What if I have a kid that had a D first quarter and an E second quarter, so D for the first semester. Then he has an E for quarter 3 and an E for quarter 4. Would he end up with a D for the year?
Here was the response:
Typically, yes. But you may want to talk with the student's counselor

This letter is spot on. My grandson graduated from Tallwood 2019. Now I have another attending in the Fall. I DO NOT AGREE NOR WILL I LET HIM BE BRAINWASHED WITH THE CRITICAL RACE THEORY BS!! They both attended Catholic School from Kindergarten to Eight grade. The best education. Wish I could afford the Catholic High School but out if my price range. My grandson is polite, takes his hat off in buildings, holds doors for women and his elders etc. Public schools are a joke. I will monitor his grades and his teacher will be told by me and his parents to give him an F
and if the Principal doesn’t like it tough shit.

Why quitting your job? It’s not the best way to give up your job. Your students need you, our parents need teachers like you. Can’t let this liberals system fool you, we need to fight fir what’s right, we need to fight to keep our original education system, we need to fight for our future, the future that needs our children-the next generation that will continue to drive the country to best of the world, not the worst of the world. Don’t quit, need to stay in there, stay in the system and work our way to fix it. School board, all the people in education system, you all work for American people, you work for us. Not tell us what to think, but to do what’s right ! No political involved, leave our students alone. All lives matter, all colors matter, we are human no regardless. Millionaire or not, same thing with homeless when you die.

I am a product of the VBCPS system and I am appalled at how misdirected this school system has become in the 20ish years since I left it. I have children of my own and I refuse to enroll them in the school system I was once proud to say I attended. 2020 showed a lot of parents they could 1) homeschool or 2) pay for private school. Now that all this ridiculousness is being pushed by the local school board and state department of education, parents are realizing the options they did for one year can be managed for longer. VBCPS is going to continue to see drops in enrollment and that will mean further cuts in budget for schools and teachers. I'm sorry to see a teacher with common sense leave because clearly we need more teachers like that in the system. But I can't blame him or her. I won't send my child there, why would I expect someone to work there.

Virginia Manning. What exactly is your goal for the students unlucky enough to pass through your school system!? Clearly you want them to amount to nothing because that's exactly what you are preparing them for. NOTHING!
Hope you don't like it job too much cause with that evil that you're don't you won't have it very long!
