Critical Race Theory (CRT) practices are becoming embedded in our nation's schools, including here in Virginia Beach.
The Virginia Beach School Board in Sept 2020 adopted a 5 page equity policy. The policy itself does not mention CRT but it does direct "Culturally Responsive Teaching and Culturally Responsive Practices (CRP)" for teacher training and student curriculum and assessments.
Watch this short video to learn about Critical Race Theory.
The Superintendent and certain board members have denied that CRT is being implement in VB Schools. I have been attacked and called a liar and many other terrible names for exposing what is going on. I am providing documentation on this site that I have received regarding teacher training and things that students are being taught in the classroom. I will show proof that CRT ideas are being used on the VBCPS school division.
A colleague stated in an email to a constituent that the purpose of the teacher training is to help them understand their "innate racial bias". We are NOT innately racist and we should NOT be making those statements to teachers or to children.
I previously supported the idea of "culturally responsive practices". It was explained to be the idea that we should have more diverse viewpoints and cultures represented in our curriculum and to be sure to teach ALL history, even the dark spots of our past. I fully support these ideas; however, what is being implemented is much more than this definition of culturally responsive practices.

Since October 2020, teachers in Virginia Beach being led by their Assistant Principal have been doing a monthly book study on "The Racial Healing Handbook". E-mails obtained through the Freedom of Information Act indicate that approximately 27 teachers participated in the book study and the book was provided to the teachers by administration.
Excerpts from the book on the topic of Christianity:
Religious identity (sometimes called spiritual identity) refers to the extent to which you identify or don’t identify with religion or spirituality—in essence your belief in whether God or some other higher power exists. Christian privilege is a hallmark of religious/spiritual privilege
In addition, people can enact religious privilege when they assume those under the atheist umbrella (e.g., agnostic, nonbeliever) are “wrong” or “misguided.”
Practice exercise for the reader: As you work to reduce religious privilege—either as a White person by using your racial privilege or as a person of color by using your own and others’ experiences of racism—what experiences, knowledge, or understandings do you need to keep in mind in terms of your religious identity intersecting with your race?
Excerpts on the topic of White Privilege and White Supremacy:
White supremacy is real, and the amount of melanin that you have in your skin signals something to the world about the societal norms that will be applied to your presumed race.
If you are a person of color, you have internalized negative messages and beliefs about your race, and if you are White, you have internalized a sense of dominance related to your race.
For White people, the phrase “internalized dominance” may be more accurate; racism, with its assumption of White supremacy, can lead to ignorance and disregard of other cultures and blindness to their own privilege.
When you are born, racism is already in place.
Denial about racism can look like White folks enacting White supremacy
Because racism is pretty much everywhere…. you will unexpectedly find yourself in what I like to call the “flow of racism.” (author’s words)
Excerpts on Adultism:
Adultism is the oppression of children, adolescents, and those who are perceived as young in society. Adultism manifests in the idea that children and adolescents must be controlled and don’t have agency over their own bodies and decisions
Apparently, when information about this book study was made public, the study was then cancelled. 16 of the teachers then signed a letter and sent it to the School Board indicating their displeasure with my outspokenness on this topic. These teachers further ask how they can "have conversations with our students if they cannot have conversations amongst ourselves". This indicates to me that it is their intent to indoctrinate VB Students on these topics.

During the March 23, 2021 School Board meeting, Board member Carolyn Weems asked these 2 questions of the Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI):
QUESTION 1: --WEEMS: Is teacher training mandatory? --DEI DIRECTOR: All teacher professional learning around culturally responsive practices (CRP) is optional. --SUPERINTENDENT IN AN EMAIL TO A CONSTITUENT: The TRAINING THAT WAS POSTED by No Left Turn was a department level training for literacy coaches and it was MANDATORY. (However, he denies that it is CRP or CRT.) https://rumble.com/ve2wxb-vbcps-critical-race-theory.html
Question 2: -- WEEMS: Is it going to impact a teacher's ability to get a promotion if they don't take the trainings for culturally responsive practices such as the Cultural Identity Master Badge? --DIRECTOR OF DEI: All training is optional, it will not impact someone from receiving a promotion
THE TRUTH DIVISION DOCUMENT FROM THE DEPT OF TEACHING AND LEARNING (DTAL)
"A demonstration of mastery in these areas, as identified by earning a master badge WILL BE A PREREQUISITE for job vacancies within the DTAL for coaching, specialist and/or curriculum coordinator positions. Furthermore, preferences will be given to teachers who have earned any of the above badges when applying for curriculum and/or textbook review committees or other DTAL-sponsored committees........

IDENTIFYING BIAS IN CURRICULUM: Bias Checker
The School Board Equity Policy in section F states that all curriculum materials shall be examined for bias by the Department of Teaching and Learning. An e-mail obtained through FOIA shows one of the resources they could be considering using as a "bias checker template". While some of the items in the bias checker are positive, not everyone may agree with some of them.
Take a look for yourself. Here are some of the items they are considering:
* Does this source present Whiteness as the standard or norm? * Does this source present gender binary as the standard or norm? * Does this source demonstrate positive sexual identities * Does this source present Christianity as the standard or norm? * Does the source include a conversation or example of non-citizens that normalizes other forms of residency? * Does this source assume that people involved with the criminal justice system are at fault or guilty? * Does this source present US Citizenship as the standard or norm? * Does this source present two-parent, birth families as the standard or norm?
